Areas to be cleaned up include Wath Road, the canal area, Adwick Road and Highwoods.

Youngsters from Mexborough Academy have also agreed to clean up the area around the school.

Mexborough First councillor Sean Gibbons, who is helping to organise the event, said: “The Queen’s birthday will be a huge occasion for the whole nation so doing something to make our town’s and villages look nicer is a great idea.

“We should be proud of our hometown and take pride in keeping it tidy.

“Taking part in something like this gives you a great sense of pride and achievement.

“I would urge as many people as possible to come along and help out.”

Gloves, litter pickers and refreshments will be provided on the day.

There are around 75 clean-up events organised around South Yorkshire in the lead up to the June celebrations.
