DOG walkers are being urged to come forward if they have seen anyone suspicious near Markham Main Colliery after thieves tried to steal railway cables.
The British Transport Police are investigating a number of attempts to steal cable from the railway line close to the colliery in Armthorpe, which led to signalling problem as thieves tried to drag the cables across the tracks.
Detective Constable Lee Parsons from British Transport Police said: “This area, near to Markham Main Colliery, is a popular dog walking area, and we hope that someone may have witnessed the attempted thefts or have seen someone acting suspiciously. Despite the colliery being disused the railway line in the area is still live and operational.
“We have now increased patrols in the area in a bid to catch those responsible. The theft of cable has a direct impact on the everyday lives of the travelling public; it really is an attack on the community.”
The attempted thefts happened on Wednesday, 16 May 2012, at around 11pm and a similar incident the day before.
