Man fined for selling dogs without licence

Martin O’Hara from Timberlands, Scunthorpe, also paid a £50 surcharge and was disqualified from obtaining a pet shop licence to sell dogs or any other animals, at court on June 3.

North Lincolnshire Council’s licensing team received complaints in October and November 2014 alleging that Martin O’Hara was selling dogs without a licence.

The licensing team advised Mr O’Hara in February 2014 that he needed to obtain a licence to do this, but he continued his activities.

Mr O’Hara advertised numerous dogs for sale on a range of websites; all different breeds.

Trading Standards and licensing officers, with police assistance, searched Mr O’Hara’s premises on February 10 this year. They found documents including:

Sales receipts from selling dogs

Vaccination certificates from Ireland

Diary entries with dates for the collection of dogs from Scotland, dates of customers viewing puppies and dates for deliveries of puppies to customers

Mr O’Hara admitted to buying dogs from Ireland and selling them online, even though he had been advised otherwise by the licensing department.

Coun Neil Poole, cabinet member for Neighbourhoods, said: “It is hugely disappointing that people think it is acceptable to use animals for financial gain. Let this be a warning to people who think they can get away without having a licence; you will eventually get caught. The pet shop licence ensures the health and well-being of animals being sold so that no harm comes to them so it is extremely important that people selling animals obtain one.
