Major bus smartcard scheme launched across the Dearne

BUS passengers in parts of South Yorkshire are to benefit from the launch of an innovative smartcard ticketing scheme in the area. `

The scheme that is now live on 150 Stagecoach buses across the Dearne Valley and Barnsley, allows bus passengers to store their travel on an electronic card instead of using paper tickets. It also offers customers the chance to pay for travel through automatic payments.

The Government has said that most public transport journeys should be made using smart ticketing by December 2014.

Paul Lynch, managing director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: “We know we have a responsibility to our customers to continue introducing new technology and new ideas to improve their travel experience. We believe the launch of StagecoachSmart will encourage even more people to try our greener, smarter bus services.”

The launch of StagecoachSmart in parts of South Yorkshire offers passengers the chance to sign up to the company’s new Megarider Xtra ticket which allows monthly payments to be debited from the customer’s bank account, so they no longer have to renew their ticket manually. The customer’s Megarider Xtra ticket is stored on their StagecoachSmart travel card and remains valid for travel until the payment is cancelled.

Stagecoach Group has already introduced StagecoachSmart travel cards at its bus companies in Cambridgeshire, Oxfordshire, Manchester, the South East and the North East.
