Machines have been brought in to break up bales of hay burning at a recycling centre in Rotherham.

Firefighters hope it will make it easier for them to reach deep-seated flames burning under the huge pile of bales.

The fire broke out at Universal Recycling, Wharf Road, Kilnhurst, at 10am yesterday and firefighters have been at the site ever since.

Crews expect to remain there for the rest of the day.

Residents have been asked to avoid the area.

Firefighters have warned that there will be a large amount of smoke in and around Kilnhurst for most of the day.
