LETTER: Jamie McDonnell, setting boxing world alight

The boxing world is buzzing with what could be the crowning of Britain’s best ever Bantamweight world champion - no other than Hatfield’s very own Jamie McDonnell.

This month, Jamie the current WBA world champion, thought nothing of returning to Texas to fight a return match with the very tough and durable Japanese born/Mexican trained, Tomoki Kameda. Jamie boxed the fight of his life, delivering the ultimate boxing lesson, that I am sure Kameda will never forget. It is no mean feat for any British boxer at any weight to secure a win in the USA, and for Jamie to do this twice is nothing short of remarkable. Jamie is not only an outstanding world champion boxer, he is also one of the nicest young men you could whish to meet, he is also a fantastic ambassador for the sport of boxing in general. The point I am trying to make is, why have the powers that be in Doncaster, failed to recognise the achievements of this local boxing hero? He is an outstanding example to the youth of our town of what can be achieved by dedication and hard work, Surely it is time for Mayor Ros Jones, to step up to the plate and give Jamie the recognition he truly deservers, may I suggest ‘Honorary Freeman of the Town of Doncaster’.

I can’t start to tell Ros Jones, just how proud myself and all the residents of Doncaster are for Jamie’s achievements.
