A South Yorkshire man has helped to raise over £10,000 for charity by completing a gruelling trek to Base Camp Everest.
Grant Budge, of Doncaster, took part in the fundraising challenge in aid of WellChild for the charity’s work with seriously ill children and their families in the UK.
He had to trek for 12 days to reach the camp which is 5,357m above sea level.
Speaking after completing his challenge, Grant said: “This was an amazing challenge and very rewarding on two levels.
“First for the camaraderie of the group, for views and for the opportunity to stand somewhere few people get to experience.
“Secondly because out of all the challenges I’ve done, this one seemed to capture the minds of sponsors more than any other, leading to the biggest support for the charity I have ever managed to muster.”
WellChild Chief Executive Colin Dyer said he was ‘delighted’ that Grant has decided to support WellChild.
He said: “It’s great that Grant has completed this amazing challenge to help us.
“For many of the children, young people and families we support, just getting through the day is a huge challenge.
“The children have an Everest to climb in trying to live the kind of normal life we all take for granted.
“On their behalf I thank Grant for all the hard work he has put in.”
WellChild provides essential and practical support in the hope of ensuring that the increasing number of seriously ill children and young people in the UK have the best possible quality of care.
The charity provides a team of WellChild children nurses who work with families to ensure that children with complex care needs can leave hospital and return home and through its Helping Hands scheme, WellChild enlists the support of volunteers to tackle practical projects in the homes of sick children.
In addition, the charity has invested more than £20 million in ground-breaking children’s health research projects over the past 30 years leading to many improvements in children’s heath spanning from pain relief to liver and kidney disease.
