Just two coronavirus deaths have been recorded in Doncaster in the last seven days, new figures show.

The town’s death toll again remains static at 225, according to new figures released by NHS England.

Last Tuesday, the figure stood at 223, meaning there have been just two recorded deaths in the Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Teaching Hopsitals Foundation Trust in the last week,

The Trust includes Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Mexborough’s Montagu Hospital and Bassetlaw Hospital at Worksop.

In Sheffield there have been 286 deaths, 147 in Barnsley and 195 in Rotherham, which was the only place to see a fatality.

The UK death toll currently stands at 44,236.

Earlier today, new figures revealed that deaths in Doncaster remained far higher than normal levels in May following a spike the previous month.

Office for National Statistics figures show 336 deaths were recorded in Doncaster during May.

That was 69 more than the number recorded in May 2019, a rise of 26%.

Doncaster also saw a jump in fatalities in the previous month, with 174 more deaths recorded compared to April 2019 – an increase of 65%.

It means that in the year to the end of May there were 290 (21%) more deaths than at the same point last year.

The new figures come after Doncaster health chiefs rubbished claims of an impending local lockdown saying the borough is ‘nowhere near’ that situation

Director of public health Dr Rupert Suckling, said the most recent available data published every week shows the infection rate is 21.6 per 100,000.
