HUNDREDS of jobs are at risk after owners of the site which homes the country’s last remaining deep coal mines have proposed it be mothballed.

Hargreaves Services said Maltby Colliery in Rotherham, which has been producing coal for more than 100 years, was no longer viable on several grounds including health and safety and financial.

The board has proposed the pit, which employs around 500 workers, will be mothballed, putting all employees at risk of redundancy.

The company said it was consulting with unions which are being asked to table alternative proposals by November 30.
