Around 240 new jobs are set to be created as part of a scheme to transform a B&Q store into a Sainsbury’s supermarket in Barnsley.

The two companies have exchanged contracts to redevelop the existing B&Q store at Stairfoot Business Park.

Currently the building is restricted to the sale of DIY products only, and subject to agreeing the lifting of this restriction with Barnsley Council, the main building will be converted to into a new Sainsbury’s.

The proposed redevelopment will create a net increase of at least 240 new jobs.

All existing members of staff at the B&Q store will be offered the opportunity of an interview with Sainsbury’s.

Grant Anderson, divisional director of east at B&Q, said: “We have been in Barnsley for 32 years and it is with regret that we announce our intention to close the store.

“As our Dearne Valley store at the Corton Wood Retail Park is nearby, we believe we are well set to continue to serve our customers in Barnsley after the current store on Bleachcroft Way has closed.

“We are committed to working with Sainsbury’s to do everything possible to minimise the impact of the closure for our employees and we will continue to serve our Barnsley customers to the highest possible standard over the coming months.”

Sainsbury’s has informed Barnsley Council of its intentions for the proposed store with a sales area of 72,000 sq ft.

Sainsbury’s will now consult with the local community over its proposals prior to submitting and planning application.

The planning application will seek to lift the restriction on the building and make other changes needed before opening the new store.

Bruno Moore, head of town planning for Sainsbury’s, said: “We intend to hold a public exhibition about our proposals in September, and will be in touch with neighbouring residents and businesses to discuss our plans over the summer months. The new foodstore will offer the full range of Sainsbury’s products.

“We’re very excited about the possibility of opening a new store in Barnsley and playing a big role in the local community.”
