Christmas comes somewhat belatedly to the ‘Con’ Club next Thursday, April 28, in the more than welcome form of the New Jazz Messengers and Shirley Patterson-whose Yuletide session at the venue was a casualty of the severe wintery conditions.
So don’t be surprised if Shirl and the boys don’t appear in Santa Claus outfits, even if a couple of Christmas tunes are impishly included.
The line up is expected to be Mike Taylor-Trombone, Geoff Patterson-Clarinet, Colin Wood-Piano, Doug White-Double Bass and Roy Walker-Drums. The ‘Mighty’ Bob Quinn is expected to share vocal honours with Shirl. Stomp-off is at 8:30 pm, admission £5 at the door.
May gigs at the venue include: Spraggy and Co. Monday May 9, and rumours are that Dickie Emmerson may make his triumphant return at the session. The South Side Jazz Band May 12 and Nicki Allan Sextet May 26. Don’t forget Doncaster Markets Jazz day on Saturday May 28, 11am–3pm.
Barnsley Jazz at Silkstone Lodge have the White Eagles Jazz Band on Easter Monday. The Knights of Jazz are at the Butchers Arms, Braithwell every Monday night (01302 842223). The Silver leaf Jazz Band appear every Wednesday at the Strafford Arms, Stainborough, Barnsley (01226 751989). At Sheffield Show Room, Sunday lunch, April 24 is Bill Sutton (Piano) and Rob Skeet (Sax).
