McDonnell is in Monte Carlo for the fifth defence of his WBA bantamweight title.

And after 16 weeks of training and seven months since his last fight, he is champing at the bit for Saturday’s bout against Liborio Solis.

“You get to the stage where you’re just ready to throw some punches,” McDonnell told the Free Press.

“This has been a really long camp. Too long really. Ideally you want ten weeks at the most but we’ve made the most of it.

“I feel great. The weight has been bang on all the way through and I’m flying.

“I’m buzzing about it. I’m struggling to calm down.

“But I’m desperate to get in there now.

“I’ve been going to bed early and then not being able to go to sleep because I’m thinking about it.

“I just want to get in there and smash someone up.”

Solis is a former world flyweight champion who contested the WBC bantamweight title earlier this year, taking the highly-rated champion Shinsuke Yamanaka the distance.

McDonnell is confident however of coming through his latest defence unscathed.

He said: “It’s a decent test but I think it’s all set up for me, style-wise.

“If I don’t do anything stupid, I should be pretty comfortable in this one.”
