Isle teens to benefit from new UTC

Students from across the Isle will benefit from the creation of a new £9.5m Humber University Technical College that is the first of its kind in this region, and is set to create 600 student places and 220 jobs.

Building work has begun, and the Rt Hon Lord Baker of Dorking was at Church Square in Scunthorpe for the groundbreaking ceremony. He was joined by some key partners, namely Coun Liz Redfern, Peter Stephenson (executive chairman, Able UK Ltd), Jon Bolton (director, long products, Tata Steel), Prof Calie Pistorius (vice chancellor, University of Hull), David Earnshaw (chair of the board, Outwood Grange Academies Trust) and many others.

The UTC will be project managed by the existing Local Education Partnership and will open to students in September 2015.

Expressly for 14 to 19 year-olds, its courses will be designed and delivered by business and education partners. It will specialise in bringing skills for the engineering and renewable energy sector to life – along with English, maths and science.

Students will work closely with employers to qualify them to work in sectors that are seeking skilled staff. All students will work on live projects and showcase them to future employers throughout their time at Humber UTC.

All successful UTC graduates will be offered interviews with major employers and conditional offers to study engineering at the University of Hull.
