Isle has one of the highest number of smokers

More than 20 per cent of people in area smoke, according to data from the Office for National Statistics.

The number of smokers in North Lincolnshire is dropping, however, due to a successful anti-tobacco strategy from the government.

In 2011, 22.2 per cent of North Lincolnshire’s population smoked. By 2017 this figure had dropped to 20.8 per cent.

Deborah Arnott, Action on Smoking and Health chief executive, said: “Smoking rates have fallen because over the last twenty years the government has gone further and faster in tackling smoking.

“Britain has kept its tobacco taxes amongst the highest in the world, banned advertising promotion and sponsorship, put tobacco out of sight in shops and replaced the glitzy, brightly coloured packs with ugly dark packs with large picture warnings.

The data also suggests that more young adults are shunning cigarettes.

The percentage of North Lincolnshire’s population who have never smoked has risen by 19 per cent since 2011, because 18 to 24-year-olds are choosing not to.
