A new way to get into nursing has been created thanks to a new course at the college.

A healthcare cadet course is being launched for 16 to 18-year-olds interested in a career in nursing. They can apply for the advanced healthcare cadet course, starting in September, where they’ll learn the skills to become a healthcare assistant over two years.

During the course they’ll spend three days at college and two on the wards; crucially giving them the key clinical skills they’ll need for their career. They will graduate with a level three extended diploma in health and social care, the equivalent of three A levels.

Simon Dunn, assistant director of organisational development and workforce at NLaG, said: “We’re forging these links with the local college to strengthen our workforce now and secure it for the future. We’re investing in local people by helping them get the clinical skills they need and guaranteeing them a job at the end of their course.”

Emily Hughes, assistant principal at JLC, said: “The healthcare cadets programme is unique for the Humber region. This creative, innovative and hands-on programme will aid young people from across the area to get the academic and clinical experience required to support progression to nursing and highly competitive roles and courses within the sector.”

If you’re aged 16 to 18 and interested in a career in nursing you are invited to the open day at the college on Thursday April 29 from 4.30pm to 8.30pm – no need to book, just turn up.

Applications for the course are due in by Monday May 11 at 4pm. Please email [email protected] or call 01724 282998.
