Breakin’ Convention, the critically acclaimed international festival of hip hop dance theatre is set to arrive in Doncaster next month at the start of a major national tour.
The hugely successful celebration of hip hop culture, which comes to the Cast theatre on Saturday May 10, features high energy performances from UK and international companies.
And specifically for the Cast weekend, there will be a special lineup of South Yorkshire talent on stage.
DJs, dancers, demonstrations and workshops will also take over Cast in the ultimate celebration of hip hop culture, with free on the day activities from 12 noon to 3pm in Sir Nigel Gresley Square outside Cast – and a pre show event in Cast from 6pm.
Now in its 11th year, the hugely popular Sadler’s Wells Production, which opens in London on May Bank Holiday weekend prior to its Doncaster date, is hosted and curated by eminent UK hip hop theatre artist Jonzi D.
The 2014 line-up, supported by Dance Consortium, includes Olivier Award-nominated ILL-Abilities, an international group of b-boys who have overcome extraordinary challenges, helping to spread the message “No Excuses, No Limits” and redefine society’s view of disability, promote empowerment, and encourage limitless possibilities through motivational entertainment.
Also featuring is Ukweli Roach, who presents an ensemble performance about temptation and vice. A highly skilled artist and founding member of BirdGang Dance Company, Ukweli Roach has choreographed and performed world-wide as well as working as an actor in film, television and theatre.
France’s Wanted Posse are widely respected and have won many of the world’s most high profile hip hop dance battles for over a decade. Their work expresses the roots of their personal revolutions.
South Yorkshire companies being featured include Limited Edition, Rhythmic Jokers, Street Beat Elite, URBAN Conceptz Theatre and Urban Jokers – with more to be announced! – not sure if that’s correct, take out just in case.
