Increase in fat cats leads to donation by South Yorkshire scales firm

Twelve weighing scales donated to Battersea Dogs & Cats Home by Rotherham scales manufacturer Marsden will help with the growing number of overweight cats arriving at the shelter.

The company, which has headquarters on Sheffield Road, donated the V-22 Veterinary Scales after hearing how frequently weighing scales were used at Battersea, where the vet team has recently seen a noticeable increase in the number of overweight cats admitted to Battersea.

Some cats have been weighing in at as much as 8kg when they arrive at Battersea - more than twice their recommended weight.

Shaun Opperman, Director of Veterinary Services at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home said: “People often don’t realise they are overfeeding their cats. Factors include not weighing their food out, not giving them the opportunity to exercise, and boredom eating.

“We make sure every cat at Battersea is weighed regularly to ensure they maintain a healthy size - which will help them live a longer, happier life.”

Marsden Managing Director Richard Black added: “The V-22 is one of our most popular veterinary scales, because it’s lightweight, easy to use and highly accurate.

“After donating two of our larger V-150 Veterinary Scales we became aware that Battersea were in need of smaller scales for cats and smaller dog breeds. We donated 12 scales to help with weight monitoring, and we’re delighted to see they’re already in regular use.”
