A member of the public made an emergency call shortly after 4.30am today reporting that two people had tried to force their way into his address using a weapon with a long blade.
They had not gained entry to the property and had made off on foot.
The caller, a 37-year-old man, had sustained a small injury to the hand but was otherwise unharmed.
Officers were deployed and conducted an area search and as a result of enquiries police are now in attendance in the Mary Street area.
As a matter of precaution, to ensure the safety of all involved, a cordon has been erected and roads in the immediate vicinity have been closed.
Specialist officers, including firearms officers, are at the scene and the incident is ongoing.
Superintendent Mark Johansson said: "I apologise for the inconvenience this is causing to people who want to get about their daily business.
"We are making every effort to bring the matter to a safe conclusion as soon as possible but in the mean time I would ask members of the public to avoid the area."
