Last year’s shortlisted nominees were Jason Sullivan who investigated an activated smoke alarm. This led to him rescuing an elderly gentleman from his burning flat; Derek and Brandon Fountain broke down the door of the burning home of an elderly lady and brought her to safety; and Gayle Brown saw a young boy get engulfed by flames when playing with a lighter and rolled him on the ground to extinguish the flames.

Following a tightly contested public vote, the winner was Gayle who was presented with her award by Chief Fire Officer Richard Hannigan.

Members of the public are being asked to think of someone they know, which could be a family member, friend or colleague who they feel has acted in a heroic manner and is deserving of receiving such an award.

Katrina Goodhand, organiser of the Community Awards for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: “There will be a number of different awards given at the ceremony, to members of the public, our partners and staff, in recognition of the contribution they have made in creating safer communities.

“For the Local Hero award we are asking people to nominate someone they think has acted in a manner befitting the title of Local Hero. This does not necessarily mean that they have performed some kind of rescue, as heroic acts can be carried out by people who just make a really positive difference to others through their actions.”

Nominations can be submitted to Humberside Fire and Rescue Service by calling or texting 07581 495960, emailing [email protected] or by sending a letter to: Local Hero FREEPOST NEA3610
