Highfield Country Park holds volunteer days

Groundwork, a social enterprise dedicated to delivering environmental and social regeneration, has teamed up with Doncaster CVS and Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council to hold volunteer days aimed at improving and maintaining Highfields Country Park.

Located in the Woodlands area of Doncaster, Highfields Country Park is renowned for its fishing lakes, some of which are over 120 years old, and its stunning scenery making it one of South Yorkshire’s most popular leisure destinations.

Explains Tom Gorman from Groundwork: “We’re holding our very first monthly volunteer day on Monday 22nd June from 9.15am to 2pm. We’ll provide all the equipment required as well as refreshments throughout the day – it’s the perfect opportunity for people to make a difference in their local park.

“We’re looking for volunteers to come and help us tackle the increasing problem of fly tipping and littering within the park so we’re calling the project our ‘Summer Blitz’. Everyone is welcome and the more volunteers that come along, the more we can get done together.”

Continues Tom: “Over the next few months, the volunteer days will involve a variety of tasks including painting, fence and path maintenance, planting, hedge trimming and creating a brand new feature in the park – more details to follow!”

Concludes Tom McKnight from Doncaster CVS: “Volunteering is suitable for people of all ages, from all different walks of life and it’s highly valuable both from a community and personal development perspective. Everyone I talk to who volunteers finds the experience rewarding and educational and I’m certain the volunteer days that Groundwork are running at Highfields Country Park will be no exception.”
