Heaven 17 voted greatest Sheffield band of all time
New wave and synthpop pioneers Heaven 17 have been crowned as the greatest Sheffield band of all-time in an online poll.
The band, famed for hits such as Temptation and Play To Win certainly lived up to the latter by clocking up more than 2,200 votes in our survey - putting them nearly 500 ahead of nearest challengers, rockers Def Leppard.
The duo - Glenn Gregory and Martyn Ware - were helped to victory by fans who flocked to support the band, formed from the ashes of an early incarnation of The Human League in 1980.
More than 6,000 votes were cast in the poll - with Heaven 17 picking up more than a third to put them top of the pops ahead of Joe Elliott and his Let's Get Rocked and Animal hitmakers who secured second spot with 1,700 votes.
The Human League, best remembered for hits such as Don't You Want Me and Love Action clinched third spot with fellow 80s favourites ABC, who scored top ten hits with Poison Arrow and The Look Of Love making it an eighties themed top four.
Jarvis Cocker's Pulp could only muster enough votes to finish fifth with the Arctic Monkeys limping into sixth place.
Bringing up the field were Sing It Back dance favourites Moloko, Heavyweight Champion of The World hitmakers Reverend and The Makers with new rock pretenders Bring Me The Horizon and You're Gorgeous favourites Babybird finishing in tenth and last spot.
Several readers bemoaned the fact that the poll didn't include industrial and post punk favourites Cabaret Voltaire while others called for city metalcore band While She Sleeps to be included in the vote.
