Heatwave sparks crime in Doncaster

With warm weather comes an increase in Summer related crimes. According to Police, thefts from homes and cars rise as people leave windows and doors unlocked. (Picture posed by model).

Officers today said soaring temperatures have led to a corresponding rise in the number of thefts from people’s cars and homes.

Superintendent Neil Thomas said: “People have been leaving their car windows and back doors open recently because we’ve had nice weather, and as a result we have had a spate of thefts from people’s cars and homes.

“Unfortunately, people have been leaving their valuables on show in their cars or homes in the last few days, but also leaving their windows or doors open as temperatures increase.

“It’s a seasonal issue and therefore it’s not unexpected. Unfortunately, thieves will prey on the fact people are leaving their doors and windows open in this warm weather.

“I know it is tempting in this heat to leave your back door open while you go and sit in your front room, for example, but if you do that there is also a danger that somebody might hop over your garden fence or gate, come in to your home and steal your belongings.

“We have also seen things stolen from sheds when people have left them open after they have gone in to get gardening equipment.”

Mr Thomas urged people to make sure they keep their belongings safe during the warm weather by keeping them in sight and close by, making sure all windows are locked - even when inside - and ensuring all windows and doors are closed and locked when leaving your home or vehicle.

Each summer, South Yorkshire Police also issue general advice on how to prevent burglaries and thefts.

It is recommended that people do not leave keys visible, keep valuable property out of sight where possible, use lighting and switches when possible to indicate someone is at home, take keys, wallets and other valuables upstairs when you going to bed and have effective house alarms and window locks fitted.

It is also suggested that residents sign up to their neighbourhood watch scheme and speak to a crime reduction officer or safer neighbourhood officer for advice.

Temperatures have soared across the borough since Monday.

Temperatures were forecast to remain high today, Thursday, with the met office forecasting the mercury to be around 21°C in the borough at the warmest time of the day.

But it is expected to cool down for the weekend.
