Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that there were 85 suicides in Doncaster between 2015 and 2017, at a rate of 10.7 deaths per 100,000 people. Rates are measured over a three-year period and between 2012 and 2014, there were 10.3 suicides registered per 100,000 people. The rate over the last three years was also slightly higher than that across Yorkshire and the Humber as a whole, where 10.4 suicides were registered per 100,000 people. Overall, there were 10.1 suicides per 100,000 people in the UK last year. Last year, there were 33 suicides in Doncaster, three more than in 2016. Ruth Sutherland, the Samaritans chief executive, said:: 'One death by suicide is still one too many. Suicide is complex and it's a problem of inequality. This is an urgent public health issue, not simply a health or mental health one." The statistics, which come after World Suicide Prevention Day yesterday, include all deaths from intentional self-harm for people over the age of 10 and deaths where the intent was undetermined for those aged over 15 years old.
