A Doncaster schoolgirl who launched a fundraising campaign while battling cancer is celebrating smashing her target.
Laura Powell, from Balby, has been undergoing treatment at Sheffield Children’s Hospital for a brain tumour while embarking on her charity mission.
The 10-year-old aimed to raise £5,800 for The Sick Children’s Trust, which arranged for her parents – Annette, 37, and 40-year-old Mark – to stay with her in hospital while she underwent surgery to remove the tumour last November.
Now, following a cake sale at Woodfield Park Community Hall, Laura’s fundraising stands at £8,000 – and she plans to carry on with her charity work.
Annette said: “The event was a huge success. I would estimate there were more than 300 people in attendance.
“When Laura decided she wanted to do a cake sale, we never imagined anything of the scale it was.
“Once we started putting things into place, we were inundated with offers of support from businesses and individuals.” As well as the cake sale, attractions included a visit by characters from Disney’s hit film Frozen, a bouncy castle, facepainting, raffle and a tombola.
Annette said: “Laura enjoyed the tombola best. She prepared all the prizes and tickets and helped on the stall on the day.
“The highlight for me was seeing so many people taking time out of their day to show their support.
“We had friends, relatives and neighbours manning stalls.”
