A nasal spray vaccine against flu is to be available to Rotherham tots for the first time.

Two and three year olds will be among those to be offered the flu vaccine because they are considered vulnerable.

Public Health England and NHS England urge everyone who is offered the flu vaccine to accept it to protect themselves this winter.

The tot sprays are the first move forward in extending the national flu vaccination programme to include annual vaccination of all two to 16-year olds at a later date.

A study by Public Health England (PHE) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine found children to be key spreaders of the flu virus.

Two and three-year olds will be offered the nasal spray vaccine as their natural close contact with each other makes them more likely to pass the virus to other youngsters and elderly people.

Parents will be encouraged by a national advertising campaign run by PHE, with people aged 65 and over, adults and children with long term health conditions and pregnant women also being targeted to accept offers of vaccination.

For information on how to get your child vaccinated, contact your local GP surgery.
