North Lincolnshire hospital trust’s new text alert service

From next month patients at Scunthorpe, Grimsby and Goole hospitals will be able to take advantage of a new text message reminder service.

Available from Monday September 1, 2014, for all outpatient appointments, the service is being set up to tackle a high number of non-attendances at the Trust.

When patients don’t turn up for their appointment it gets classed as a ‘Did Not Attend’ (DNA). Every year around 10 per cent of patients fail to turn up for their appointment, costing time and money, taking valuable resources away from the NHS.

Karen Wilson, interim general manager/head of nursing for medicine, said: “We are really excited to be able to launch this service. We have a lot of patients who don’t turn up for their appointments, often simply because they have forgotten, which is a waste of NHS resources. We hope patients choose to use the service and in turn that we will see a reduction in the number of DNAs in our hospitals.”

Patients need to opt into the service to be able to benefit from it. You can do this from today by speaking to the reception of the department treating you.

If you have an appointment you can’t make it to please inform the hospital so your slot can be given to another patient.
