An outdoor gym is set to help make the the youth of Sheffield that litle bit healthier.
Chapeltown Park now has 12 pieces of equipment situated at the top of the hill overlooking the children’s playground.
The Friends of Chapeltown Park are slowly working towards their aim of providing some much needed facilities in the park for older children and adults.
Friends’ spokesman Doris Denton said: “It has taken three years to get the funding for this project and we would like to thank SCC Parks Department for their co-operation and the many sponsors who granted money to enable the project to go ahead.
“The funders are: Planning Gain funds; Big Lottery Awards for all; Friends of Chapeltown Park; Ecclesfield Parish Council, JG Graves Charitable Trust, North Sheffield Area TARA; Sheffield Town Trust, Sheffield Church Burgesses Fund and public donations.”
The second part of the project will be the long awaited skate park for which the group is still fundraising. Thanks go to everyone who has already contributed.
The gym is already proving extremely popular since it was installed at the end of June.
Jo Cantle from Barnsley Wellness Centre, which is also based in Chapeltown, said: “This new facility is great for all ages and abilities. Everyone really enjoys exercising in such lovely surroundings with great views over the whole of Chapeltown.”
If anyone would like some free advice and help in using the equipment safely then trainers Mark and Dawn will be on site on Monday September 7 from 10am to 11am and every following Monday.
The Friends of Chapeltown Park are also pleased to announce that Angela Smith MP has kindly agreed to officially open the outdoor gym.
A short ceremony is due to take place on Sunday September 6 at 1pm in Chapeltown Park.
After this there will be a brass band concert with Chapeltown Silver Prize Band.
