A scheme to support Doncaster people who are recovering from drug and alcohol problems has proved so successful that it is to be expanded.
Due to high demand, the Doncaster Mentoring Team will be launching its third mentoring training course in August this year and is already planning another course in January 2014.
Provided by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH) Drug and Alcohol Services, the course is supported and facilitated by specialists who include child protection nurses, drug and alcohol workers and mental health workers.
The course is run one day a week for 12 weeks and covers aspects of supporting people, from confidentiality and boundaries issues, models of addiction, the cycle of change and the range of recovery support interventions that are on offer.
RDaSH service manager Paula Brocklesby said: “The service is going from strength to strength. The mentors and volunteers are imbedded in several group work sessions that range from ‘Mood Master’* to recovery at probation.”
Mentors also offer one-to-one support, for example accompanying people to access services and groups such as Mood Master, AA, Narcotics Anonymous or Smart Recovery; support and visits during inpatient detox; help with motivation; finding training; getting back into studying and getting involved in what’s happening in the recovery community.
Paula added: “It may be as simple as meeting the person for a coffee and building up their confidence in social situations, or finding out what their interests are and what’s available in their area to get involved in. It’s a formal friendship with boundaries, providing access to a new social space.”
A mentor should have completed their drug and alcohol treatment, are currently in active recovery and have been away from criminal justice services for at least two years. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer or mentor is asked to contact David Clogg on 01302 730956.
