Joining, and regularly attending, a gym has never been a problem for me personally.

From the moment I first visited Nuffield Health in Doncaster I was hooked on both its facilities and friendly feel.

In terms of the health and social benefits, signing up is one of the best decisions I have ever made.

However, since joining I have definitely learned one thing about myself when it comes to exercise - I do need a kick up the backside from time to time!

I’ll regularly do a spin class because it forces me into a 45-minute no holds barred work-out. There is no escape!

But leave me to my own devices and it will not be too long before you find me taking time out in the steam room or jacuzzi.

Going to the gym is one thing. But getting the most out of your visit, and making sure you are doing the right things while you are there, is another thing entirely.

Now I’m not alone here - and this time of year, following on from the January rush, is notorious for people losing their new year fitness focus.

But this year I’m determined to not just stay on track but push myself even harder - and if you want to do the same then I can heartily recommend two of the excellent services that Nuffield provide.

I recently undertook a full health check and personal training session with Jon Wright and it proved to be the perfect antidote to my motivational issues.

The very thorough health check, which includes checks on blood pressure, VO2 Max, resting heart rate, cholesterol and blood glucose levels, drew a clear line in the sand.

The tests will tell you exactly where you are at and where you should be, based on your sex and age. Thankfully I am on target - but I was soon to discover that there is plenty of room for improvement!

Personal training is not something I had previously considered but a 30-minute session will very quickly get you working harder and also more efficiently.

Believe me, you will be put through your paces and it won’t be easy. But you will discover new ways of training and if, like me, you need that extra little push to achieve your goals, booking a few one-on-one sessions might the best thing you ever did.

I was still aching three days later, which put me firmly in my place and helped re-align my fitness goals and targets for the year.

If you want to do the same, the staff at Nuffield are waiting to help. All you need to do is ask.
