A mystery high-pitched ‘squealing’ noise has been heard across Doncaster – leaving residents baffled.

People from as far afield as Rossington and Wheatley have reported hearing the mystery noise over the last few nights – with everything from train brakes to mating foxes being suggested as a possible cause.

Reporting the noise on Facebook, one resident said: “Anyone know what that high pitched squeal is? It's been going on for ages.”

Another added: “Been going on for a while now, few days ago I first heard it” while another posted: “It’s been for days now, I was wondering the same.”

Another poster wrote: “It’s been doing my head in,” while another added: “Might be foxes mating ... the female fox screeches.”

The noises have been heard in parts of Wheatley as well as nearby Clay Lane. It is understood that residents of Rossington have also heard similar noises.

One added: “Been going on about a week does my nut in - sounds like rusty swings.”
