Harworth: Heartless carers filmed themselves abusing elderly dementia sufferers

Two Harworth carers who filmed themselves ill-treating residents at a care home have been banned from working with vulnerable people for life.

Jane Robinson, 41, of Buckingham Court, Harworth, and Kayleigh Hockham, 26, of Bawtry Road, Harworth, worked as carers at Rose Farm Residential Care Home in Doncaster.

The home’s regional manager made a safeguarding referral in June, 2014 following concerns about a video taken by Hockham showing Robinson providing care for an elderly patient with dementia.

The pair were arrested on Friday, July 3 of this year but initially denied the video showed an offence of ill treatment.

The investigation also led to the discovery of a second video showing more ill-treatment.

The first video, filmed on a mobile phone by Hockham, showed Robinson mocking a resident in his late 80s who suffers from dementia.

The footage also shows her shouting at him and before throwing a jumper in his face.

The second video showed Hockham, who had set her phone up to film her own actions, mistreating another resident who has since died.

In the video, Hockham shouts and mocks the resident.

Robinson admitted ill treatment under the Mental Capacity Act 2015 and was banned from working with vulnerable people for life.

She was also given a two-year prison sentence suspended for 12 months.

Regional manager of Rose Hill Care Home, Anita Mctaggart, said: “The management and staff worked very closely with the police to expose the perpetrators and bring them to justice and we are very pleased with the sentences they have been handed.

“We follow strict procedures to ensure the very best care for our residents and will not tolerate any kind of negative behaviour towards them.”
