The biathlon, held recently in Solihull, involved a separately timed 800m run and 50m swim.

Greta, who attends Hill House School in Auckley, knocked six seconds off her 800m personal best time and swam close to her best to claim a podium place.

Fellow Hill House School pupil, Olivia Martin, also ran a personal best in the 800m and won the prize for the fastest swim in the under 12 girls event, finishing a very respectable 16th place out of over 60 athletes.

Doncaster Athletic Club’s Daniel Reeve was 23rd overall in the under 10 boys event.

William Payne, who had only just recovered from injury, made the top 50 in the under 11 boys competition.

Both boys are part of the Hill House School junior running and swimming clubs.

Hill House School running and swimming club coordinator, Jon Lawrie, said: “As a teacher and coach I am thrilled for Greta. To achieve a bronze medal at this national competition is a remarkable achievement.

“Greta knew going into this competition that her run needed a boost and she did extra sessions at lunch on top of the school running club.

“All pupils are now looking forward to the school’s biathlon next March.”
