Government officials looking into case for train station at Doncaster Sheffield Airport

A source at the Department for Transport said the submission stage closed earlier this month and the bid was now being looked over by Government officials. It is unclear how long this will take.

The airport station bid is up against various other applications from across the country. The DfT last gave the green-light for five new stations in 2017.

It comes as South Yorkshire metro mayor Dan Jarvis said the airport could 'do what Manchester has done' in terms of their own station which opened in 1993.

Airport bosses hope the Government will support its bid for a new train station. If successful, passengers from London King’s Cross would arrive within 90 minutes.

They said the planned station would ease congestion on cross-London rail routes by encouraging more people to fly from Doncaster Sheffield.

The airport, which is owned by Peel Group, said that initial estimates suggested it could cost between £100m and £150m to re-align the nearby East Coast main line.

Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis said: "Along with Doncaster Council and the airport, we've developed a proposal which the basis of the bid to go to Government to reaffirm our commitment of a East Coast Mainline station.

"That wouldn't just be an asset for Doncaster, of course, it's fantastic but this would benefit the whole of the region and more generally, the north of England.

"I believe that with that additional national connectivity, Doncaster Sheffield Airport can do for our side of the Pennines to what Manchester Airport has done. So I see it as a vital transport infrastructure up lift that we absolutely want to achieve.

"I'm fully committed to working with all of the stakeholders both locally and regionally but also with Government as well to deliver upon that.

"This is a key part of our global innovation corridor which will massively enhance our connectivity with the rest of the country and open up a huge amount of potential within the airport itself.

"There is agreement between the councils and the business community that this is an infrastructure project we absolutely need and it has my full backing and I'll be working to deliver upon it."
