Golf: Atherton into Audi Cup regional final | Oates wins DriveGuard Trophy
Amateur golfer Liam Atherton, from Armthorpe, has won the JCT600 Audi Invitational staged at the Oaks Golf Club with a score of 42 points.
The top qualifiers from this event will now pair up in a regional final at Rockliffe Hall in County Durham on July 28.
The one-day qualifying competition, supported by Audi Centres in Hull, York and Doncaster, was one of almost 40 Audi quattro Cup Invitational events staged throughout the UK.
Seven regional finals are held in July with the top 18 pairs going forward in to the Audi quattro Cup UK Final at Bowood Golf & Country Club near Calne, Wiltshire, in September.
Ultimately two pairs representing Great Britain compete in the Audi quattro Cup World Final staged at the Real Club de Golf El Prat in Barcelona, Spain, in October.
The Audi quattro Cup, being run for the 26th year, is the world’s largest amateur golf competition with almost 100,000 players from over 50 countries competing.
n An amateur golfer from Doncaster is one step closer to playing with a star of the European Tour after winning a prestigious Bridgestone event on his club’s calendar.
Andy Oates won Bridgestone UK tyre division’s DriveGuard Trophy at Serlby Park, which has put him on course for a round at the Pro-Am of the British Masters in October.
The 12 handicapper won the stableford competition with 33 points, which now puts him on a journey to a regional final, followed by a Pro-Am appearance at the Bridgestone Challenge – a Challenge Tour event – at the end of August at Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire.
And if Andy, who beat a field of 27 to win the DriveGuard Trophy, is part of the winning team at Heythrop, he will then go on to play at the Pro-Am of the British Masters at The Grove in October, where he will play with a household name of the sport.
