Going the extra mile to make Doncaster Jack's dream come true
A kind man is taking on two cycling challenges to raise funds for his great-nephew and the hospice that cares for him.
Dave Jewitt, of Cantley, is currently in to the second day of his ride from London to Paris to raise money for Jack Kirsopp and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
Jack, aged 10, of Cantley, has multiple debilitating conditions. These include scoliosis and a rare neurological disease. Last year, his family launched a fund-raising appeal, Jack’s Fund, to help get the cash needed to be able to take the youngster on a once in a lifetime trip to Disney World.
The three-day challenge Dave is currently completing is known as a professional event for amateurs. It is an endurance ride, managed by events company HotChillee, which is taken on by hundreds of cyclists each year.
Jack’s mum, Vicky Lee, said: “It’s amazing that people are stepping forward and really pushing themselves for Jack and Bluebell Wood, who do an incredible job with my son.
“We still have some expense to pay for with Jack’s dream holiday including insurance, wheelchair accessible car hire, medical care and equipment.
“The flights cost over £7,000 for Jack, myself and his step-dad Jonathan Riley, who are his main carers due to the fact that Jack needs a bed as he has worsening scoliosis of the spine and suffers with severe pain sometimes.
“Add almost another £2,000 for the two carers to fly with us too, this has taken a huge chunk of our fundraising total so we are doing all we can to make this holiday happen in September this year.
“These are amazing events that really push your body to its limits and to know that someone is doing that to raise funds for Jack and our extended family at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice is amazing.
“The funds raised will not only help Jack on his once in a life time holiday but help his friends at the hospice and that really is something special. I want to say thank you so much and good luck to my uncle Dave.”
Dave, aged 49, will also take on a Coast-to-Coast cycle ride on June 25, run by event management company Open Cycling, which will see him cycle 150 miles from the Lake District to Whitby in 24 hours.
