The study found that people in Yorkshire are bucking national trends as the most liberal and open in the UK.

Over two-thirds (74%) in South Yorkshire pleasure themselves more than twice a week, while those in the North East were found to masturbate the least.

The results put South Yorkshire folk well clear of places such as London, Scotland and Wales when it comes to getting intimate with themselves, according to the survey by British "pleasure brand" MysteryVibe.

Nearly half of the residents in South Yorkshire surveyed (46%) also admitted to owning at least one sex toy, compared to only 27% in North Yorkshire.

Despite the high number, many across the county struggle to openly talk about masturbation and pleasure, with 75% saying they are unable to discuss it even with their partner. This suggests that there is still a way to go in terms of breaking down barriers around masturbation.

An estimated one million people in the UK (3%) masturbate 10+ times a week, with South Yorkshire above the average, with 4% indulging in self-pleasure more than ten times a week.

18% of people in the county admitted using a sex toy at least once a week, while 1% admitted using one more than ten times a week.

Stephanie Alys, Chief Pleasure Officer of MysteryVibe, said: "There are so many positive health benefits related to masturbation and an active sex life.

"What’s more, when conversations around sex toys and masturbation are opened up between partners it can really strengthen relationships.

"Considering how the concept of sex for pleasure is absent from the majority of sex education, the fact that so many people are openly admitting to masturbating more than once a week clearly shows changing attitudes around masturbation and owning sex toys, which is widely still considered taboo.”
