Freedom of the borough nomination for former Doncaster council officer, teacher and youth worker

Tony Sockett, more commonly known working with young people, is expected to be awarded the honour following a vote by councillors on Thursday at a meeting of the Full Council.

The council is able to bestow the Freedom of the Borough on individuals who have provided '˜exceptional service' to their town or '˜enhanced its reputation through their actions'.

In his former role as the council's assistant director of leisure services, Tony promoted youth work, sports development, cultural services international 'town twinning' and the Civic Theatre.

His nomination also mentions his support for a range of voluntary projects including establishing the Bentley Area Community Partnership and serving as secretary to the Junction Project in Askern.

Tony was also successful in a bid to secure funds for additional youth work from the Department for Education.

The ex-teacher is still active today and continues to raise funding for events and good causes in Bentley.

Citizens receiving the title of '˜Honorary Freeman' receive a personalised scroll and a have the opportunity for a celebratory event at the Mansion House hosted by the Civic Mayor.

The estimated cost is approximately £1,200 and is covered from the Governance Services budget.

Mr Sockett was nominated by Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones and a panel consisting representatives from Labour, Conservatives and Mexborough First met to consider the nomination and gave it their support.

Recommending councillors vote to pass the motion, chief executive Jo Miller said: 'This is not only in recognition of Tony's years of public service but for his contribution to voluntary work and seeking to improve the lives of those in the borough over many year.'
