The Swinton Swimming Pool and Squash Court site in Charnwood Street, Swinton, has been derelict for several years after it was closed by Rotherham Council during a shake up of leisure services across the town.

But a construction firm was spotted on site this week clearing the site.

The Rotherham North Local Policing Team posted a picture on their Twitter account of the work taking place with the caption: ‘Demolition firm on site at Swinton’s old swimming baths being demolished and regenerated.’

The site has fallen into a state of disrepair in recent years and has been attacked by vandals despite it being fenced off.

Arsonists struck at the site in September last year and set fire to the old squash courts area which spread to the rest of the building.

Rotherham Council has previously earmarked the pool site and adjacent former Swinton Neighbourhood Office to be cleared to make for a new housing development.

The scheme was revealed in the authority’s Area Plan for Swinton in 2013.

At the time residents raised concerns that the move could cause excess traffic as the plan includes building on a former car park.

Nobody from Rotherham Council was available for comment at the time of going to press.
