Fergie urges Rovers players to focus on themselves

Darren Ferguson yesterday instructed each of his players to focus on their own job and their own job only as they seek to end their nine match winless run.

Doncaster Rovers make the short trip to neighbours Scunthorpe United tonight with the opportunity to pull five points clear of the League One relegation zone.

Ferguson feels some of his players have put too much pressure on themselves or taken on too much responsibility as they attempt to stop the slump.

“I just think one or two of them are concentrating on trying to do too much,” he told The Star.

“They understand the situation but maybe they’re putting too much pressure on themselves.

“We spoke to them today and I think it was an important point we’ve made; just concentrate on what you’ve got to do out on the pitch, do your job and leave the rest of the stuff to me and my staff.

“I think sometimes it can be difficult for experienced players because they can take on too much responsibility,” he added.

“It’s natural for them to want to help the younger lads but they have to get their own game right and perhaps leave all that sort of thing to me.

“It’s key for the players to do that and allow me to take the responsibility off them.”

Rovers have no fresh injury worries as they head along the M180 tonight with Nathan Tyson having shaken off a back problem he suffered in Saturday’s defeat to Shrewsbury Town.

James Coppinger remains sidelined with an ankle injury.
