Farm blaze seen for miles across Doncaster skyline

This was the giant blaze which could be seen for miles across the Doncaster skyline on Tuesday night.

Firefighters from two counties were drafted in to fight the inferno after it broke out on a farm in the borough during the evening.

The crews from South Yorkshire and Lincolnsire were called after an estimated 16,000 bales of hay caught light in the Doncaster village of Fishlake.

Road closures were put in place at Pinfold Lane and Sorrel Lane while crews deal with the flames, and they remained in place until 12noon yesterday.

Temporary signs warning motorists to travel slowly due to the smoke have been put in place.

A spokesman for Doncaster Council said they would continue to liase with the fire service on whether any more road closures were needed.

Around 25 firefighters were fighting the flames at the height of the blaze, and five were still working to dampen it down well into the afternoon.

Firefighters are expected to remain on the scene for another two days dealing with what has been described as a deep seated fire.

It is expected that officers will be dampening down on the site.

The fire at Bay Villa farm, Sorrell Lane, Fishlake, was discovered just before 7pm on Tuesday evening and there are still, and fire engines were sent straight to the scene.

It was initially thought that 6,000 bales of hay - 8,000 tonnes - were involved in the fire, but firefighters later increased their estimate to 16,000 as the day wore on.

They are allowing the flames to burn out, with, and a spokesman said their their priority was to protect neighbouring properties.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known, but investigations will be ongoing.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: “On arrival, crews found approximately 16,000 bales of hay well alight.

“Thorne and Askern attended the incident with support from neighbouring fire services in Goole and Snaith.

“Together they have worked tirelessly to bring the fire under control. Efforts are still ongoing.”

Residents commented on the blaze on social media.

Katie Jones commented that she had seen it on her way home.

She added: “Looked much nearer.”

Clare Blackmore-Parkin added: “Guess it wasn’t the pit top after all.”
