The flare, signalling the beginning of a series of events in honour of the area’s war dead, will take place at 9pm.

The next morning, at 10am, an exhibition of art, photographs, artefacts and poetry on the theme of ‘Epworth Remembers,’ to include an audio visual presentation on World War One by George Fiddler, will open at the Wesley Memorial Church Schoolroom, to be repeated on August 9.

At 11am on August 2 a memorial plaque to Epworth’s fallen, instigated by Epworth Town Council chairman Bob Fish, will be instated at Epworth’s War Memorial Field.

The plaque was produced using £680 grant cash from the Heritage Lottery, that also allowed Coun Fish to create a memorial book for the town, that will be displayed in St Andrew’s Church, in a hand-carved cabinet by local craftsman Ian Till.

Commemoration of men who died during the war will continue with shop window displays devoted to individual servicemen from August 2, using photographs where possible and including personal detail of their life stories.

St Andrew’s Church will hold an exhibition in association with National Heritage Open Days on September 11 to 14, on the theme of World War One. Anyone who would like to help, or with memorabilia to loan should contact Melvyn Rose on 01427 872080 or Penny Birks on 01427 872012.
