Doncaster shopping outlet vows to become more environmentally friendly

The environment is high on the agenda at Doncaster’s Lakeside Village, as the management team makes a number of green pledges for 2020.

Recycling at the centre currently stands at 77 percent and the team are pledging to work to improve this figure during the next 12 months.

Di Rodgers, centre manager at Lakeside Village, said: “We are really proud of our achievements in this area, but we know that we can all do more.

“We are pledging to find ways to improve our recycling and will be working closely with all of our stores to explore ways to do this.

“We all have a responsibility for the environment and working together we can reduce our waste and our impact on our local surroundings.”

219 tonnes of waste were recycled from the centre in 2019 including cardboard, soft plastic, coat hangers, glass, metal and paper.

In 2020 Lakeside is pledging to, Increase the overall Lakeside recycling rate to 80 percent, work with local businesses to clean up and maintain the Lakeside area and introduce additional recycling streams such as collections for batteries and printer cartridges.

“We are also looking at creative ways to improve the environment in which we work and during 2020 we will be working on our key pledges.

“Creating a number of new initiatives and we’ll be celebrating all things green during March when we have our Love your Lakeside Environment month,” continued Di.

The Lakeside team will also create a wildflower garden with its own water butt in conjunction with a local school.

She said: “Now is the time for people to be making positive changes to the way in which they work.

“It is important to understand what happens to our waste and we are going to visit the Ferrybridge Power Station to see what happens to 20 percent of our recycled waste, which is turned into RDF fuel, and then used to make electricity for the Yorkshire region.

“We are particularly pleased to say that we have not sent any waste to direct to landfill during the last 12 months,” added Di.
