THE English Democrats’ candidate for Doncaster’s mayoral election will be named this week, the party has announced.

Current mayor Peter Davies was initially elected into his office as a member of the party, but resigned earlier this year to become independent.

English Democrats’ chairman Robin Tilbrook said he was optimistic his party would be able to win the Doncaster vote again, and would name its candidate on Friday at its conference, in Doncaster.

He said: “We are the only serious challengers to Labour re-taking the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council Mayoralty and we look forward to the opportunity to beat them again in this May’s election.”

So far, current mayor Peter Davies, Labour’s Ros Jones, Conservative Martin Drake, and independents Doug Wright and Mick Maye have confirmed they plan to stand in May’s ballot.
