Eight years' jail for violent Doncaster sex attacker

A man who imprisoned and raped a woman in Doncaster has seen his jail term doubled.

Ryan Gillan, now aged 23, attacked and raped his victim in her home in Doncaster. He refused to let her leave and raped her, as well as attacking her by punching her in the face, head butting her, and strangling her.

The Court of Appeal has increased his prison sentence to eight years.

In February, Sheffield Crown Court jailed Gillan for four years for six offences of physical and sexual violence.

At a hearing this week, the Court of Appeal in London quashed the original sentence and doubled Gillan’s jail term to eight years’ imprisonment.

Solicitor General Robert Buckland said that Gillan’s original jail term failed to adequately to reflect the seriousness of the offence and Gillan’s culpability.
