Youngsters enjoyed dressing up as their favourite literary characters as part of celebrations for World Book Day.

Pupils at Swinton Community School joined others from across the Dearne as they took part in fun activities while dressed in costumes last Thursday.

The school library was transformed into the Land of Oz as staff and students got into the spirit of things by dressing up as characters from the Wizard of Oz.

Teen fiction author Gail Jones also dropped in to pass on her writing tips to pupils in Year 7.

Meanwhile, staff in the English and science departments surprised their students by dressing up as heroes and villains from a wide range of literary classics.
