Doncaster Council has taken control of a failing school placed into special measures for the first time in its history.
Cabinet members voted to suspend the powers of the governing body of Mexborough School Specialist Science College with immediate effect.
Chris Pratt, director of the authority’s children’s services department has now assumed control until March next year.
At yesterday’s cabinet meeting members also approved an additional recommendation for the school to be turned into an academy following a damning Ofsted report.
Mayor Peter Davies said: “It gives me no pleasure to see a school in special measures but equally this shows we are not prepared to tolerate poor education in Doncaster.
“I am delighted we are acting firmly and immediately to address problems with education in Mexborough.”
