Green light for new Goldthorpe school

A long-awaited new primary school and nursery is to be built in the centre of Goldthorpe, and is set to open late next year.

The brand-new facility was always included as part of the Goldthorpe masterplan, and will be placed on a site off the main Doncaster Road and Main Street area.

It will replace a building that is over a century old and would need well over a million pounds spending on repairs, if it were retained. The former primary school site is expected to be redeveloped for retail use, to hopefully bring more new investment.

Some compulsory order purchases were negotiated on the new school site. Dearne South Coun May Noble said: “There were some people who were reluctant to move but everything has been resoved amicably and the it’s good news for families that Goldthorpe will have a state-of-the-art school for next year.”

Coun Roy Miller, Barnsley Cabinet spokesman for Development, said the new school will bring a much-needed uplift.

He added: “The community has waited for a new school for a number of years, since the regeneration funding was cut. It will raise the confidence of businesses and housing developers in Goldthorpe and will, we hope, make a significant contribution to the future economic prosperity of the area.”
