Design students take to the bottle

Students have proved they’ve got the bottle as they designed labels for a Sprotborough based vodka company.

University Centre Doncaster graphic design students have been working with Brittains to produce the deisgns.

Charlotte Torr, Sales and Marketing Manager of Brittains, briefed the students in January at the University Centre, High Melton campus. She asked year third year BA (Hons) graphic design students to produce surface graphics concepts for the Premium Straight 5 x distilled vodka bottle range.

The winning student will receive £250 and see, hopefully, their work displayed on the shelves of Waitrose and Booths (a Lancashire based supermarket chain).

Simon Gomes, Course leader for BA (Hons) Graphic Design at the University Centre, said.

“Live projects are a crucial and an invaluable part of the programme. The experience students gain from dealing with clients face to face not only builds confidence, it requires them to question the brief and to challenge their own thinking and interpretation of any given design problem. Students can provide solutions in any number of ways including branding, advertising, moving image and website design. By the end of their degree they will have accumulated a variety of work done for local, regional and national businesses, and businesses have offered jobs to students once they have graduated. Additionally, our work placement programme allows students to gain a deeper appreciation of life in the world of work, and the scheme runs throughout the year ”.

Graphic Design third year student, Kathrine Chambers said, “ The live-briefs are extremely beneficial; not only do we get the chance and experience of working with real clients, we also have the opportunity to see our finished graphics work being used by businesses.”

Brittains owner, John Raper has steadily built up the business to where it is today. The product has evolved from a single flavour offered initially for sale in local businesses, to outlets far and wide across the country. John’s vision for expanding the product range has led to ten new flavours including Cherry, Butterscotch and Chocolate Vodka hitting the shelves recently.

Presentations of the design that the students have done will take place at the end of March, when John Raper will make the final decision on what design to use.
