An earthquake hit Manchester shortly before 9pm on Wednesday, according to the British Geological Survey which confirmed that its sensors picked up the tremor, the Manchester Evening News reported.

Experts say it was around 3km below the Earth’s surface.

Later, the Huddersfield Examiner reported that the quake had been felt in parts of West Yorkshire, just a few miles from the South Yorkshire border.

A minor tremor was felt in Doncaster in July 2013 when the quake, centred on an area of farmland between Armthorpe and Lindholme, measured 1.9 on the Richter scale.

The quake was a far cry from a tremor in 2008, centred on Market Rasen in Lincolnshire, which measured 5.2 on the scale and was felt by thousands of people across northern England.

Thousands of mini tremors are reported in the UK every year but most are so small that they are only picked up by seismologists.

Destructive earthquakes usually measure seven and above on the scale.
