The home side grasped the initiative early doors with Sarah Wilson’s 13th minute headed effort before Emily Simpkins responded by sliding a shot past an onrushing Helen Alderson in the 27th minute.

Doncaster then turned the game around on 61 minutes through Jess Sigsworth’s special strike.

After an even start, the home side hit the front through their skipper. She rose unopposed at the back post to send a header back across goal and past Belles keeper Nicky Davies.

Kirsty Hanson threatened to equalise for the visitors but her 16th minute curling effort was heading away from the far post rather than nicking inside it.

But her side would find a leveller 11 minutes later when Rebecca Rayner’s pass split the home defence, allowing Simpkins to stride forward and slot home.

Durham midfielder Beth Hepple struck the bar in the 35th minute, as the swirling wind gave the ball an extra push which forced Davies to tip the effort on to the woodwork.

Emily Roberts then danced through but found her shot blocked by Davies as the hosts looked the more likely to score.

Nicki Gears then struck the bar herself as Durham made a bright start to the second half but couldn’t find a breakthrough.

They would be made to pay for their profligacy as Doncaster took the lead in the 61st minute, Sigsworth letting a throw-in run across her body before turning and firing a looping shot over Alderson.

That would prove the difference as Doncaster secured a big win.
